How to Manage Parental Consent, Family Settings and Realms/Multiplayer Access for a Child Account

What is a Microsoft account? 

You have all access to Microsoft’s top services when you sign into your Microsoft account. You should have a Microsoft account if you plan to use any services: Outlook.com/Office, Skype, OneDrive and Xbox Live. Bing, Microsoft Store, Windows or MSN.

All your data is available in the cloud across all devices (including iOS and Android), and everything stays with you. Your Microsoft account allows you to reach the people, content and entertainment most important to you. All things Microsoft, one account.

Sign Up for a Free Microsoft Account 

  1. Go to http://xbox.com and click login or in the top-right corner of the page.
  2. Click Create one in the Log Inbox
  3. Select an email account you wish to use. To create a new email account, choose to Get a new email address.
  4. Follow these instructions to create an account.
  5. Verify that you have the correct email address in the notification email.
  6. With your new password and email address, log in to Xbox.com. Your Gamertag should be visible in the top-right.

Set Up and Manage Your Child’s Xbox Live or Microsoft Account 

Click https://account.microsoft.com/family/.

  1. Click To create a family group.
  2. Click Create an account in the Add Someone box
  3. Follow the instructions to create an account.
  4. Edit the parental settings once you have created it.

Family Account Management and Setup of Child Accounts

To create a Family Group, the Parent/Guardian must first sign in to MSA to Manage Family Accounts.

How do you create a family group?

  1. Click https://account.microsoft.com/family/.
  2. Click To create a family group.
  3. Click Create an account in the Add someone box.
  4. Start in the Register for a child’s account. Follow the steps to create an account.
    • You will be asked to create a Microsoft account for your child if they do not have one.
    • To create the family group, you will need an email other than the one you have signed in to.
  1. Edit the parental settings once you have created it.

App for Xbox Family Settings

The Xbox Family Settings app allows adults to easily manage their children’s gaming on Xbox consoles or PCs. The app allows you to modify your family settings and provide additional parental control for your children. For more information, see the Xbox Family Settings app.

You can set and edit parental controls for your child’s account.

While you can set parental controls associated with your Microsoft Account while managing that account; however, additional controls are available through Xbox.

  1. Go to https://account.xbox.com/settings
  2. Click on the account that you wish to edit. The top right should show your child’s Gamertag.

Note: These settings are not specific for the Xbox 360, indicating that you can access the options from the Xbox 360 console. These settings apply to all devices that have the same Microsoft account.

Register to Allow Multiplayer Games, Join Clubs, or Access Realms

  1. Log in to https://account.xbox.com/settings with the parent’s Microsoft account.
  2. Click on the profile of your child’s account.
  3. S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety
  4. Select Allow to join clubs and. You can also join multiplayer games.

Allow chat to be enabled for children not on the child’s friends list

The table header contains:

  1. Click Privacy
  2. Select Other users can communicate via voice, text, and invites.

Note: This option allows you to control who can see and send messages to your child, including the in-game chat in Minecraft. These settings are unique to this account.

Allows adding and removing friends from your account

  1. Log in to https://account.xbox.com/settings with the parent’s Microsoft account.
  2. Click on the profile of your child’s account.
  3. S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety
  4. Select Allow to add friends
  5. Click Submit.

How to enable ‘Require approval for every purchase.’

You may get an error when purchasing Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft Dungeons as a gift for a child/minor.

Disable Require approval for Every Purchase from your Family Safety settings to allow the purchase to proceed. Logging into your parent/guardian account and following the Family Safety guide for Microsoft’s spending limits can be done.
